Volunteers Needed Now

Skills For Living (S4L) grows significantly each year, offering exciting opportunities to volunteers. Everyone’s contribution is highly valued and appreciated. S4L depend on volunteers to plan and run adult and youth programs. In 2009, volunteers contributed more than $240,000 in services to Skills For Living. Without our volunteers, S4L programs woud cease to exist. THANK YOU for your contribution of time and talent.

20-20 Power Workshops

We need instructors and family coaches.  Instructors team teach the 20-week goal setting, financial, career and life skills curriculum. The classes meet either two nights a week for two hours each or on Saturday, once a week for four hours. Coaches connect with families each week whie they are in the year-long program, working with them on their Action Plans. They are similar to Executive Coaches, except they are volunteers. Both instructors and coaches read a book of choice on the topic of the working poor and then attend training to learn the program, the objectives and strategies for increasing the effectiveness of the 20-20 Power Workshops..

An English version application to volunteer to be an instructor or coach may be found here.

Game of Real Life

The Game of Real Life is a 15 unit summer school program for incoming 10th, 11th and 12th grade students. It is an exciting college, career and financial planning curriculum followed by a 16-hour reality simulation, experiential game where students are interviewed and trained by Houston area businesses and then over an 8-hour period they "age" from 19 to 26, one hour per year as they work, pay bills, file tax returns, complete financial statements, and purchase insurance, cars, homes while managing real life events. The Game of Real Life is conducted at area high schools, the University of Houston main campus, and Rice University.

Volunteers serve as instructors, coaches, career mentors, speed interviewers, trainers and business managers in the simulation game.
